AI Risk Assessment vs. AI System Impact Assessment: according to ISO 42001

ISO 42001, the international standard for AI management systems, requires organizations to conduct both an AI Risk Assessment and an AI System Impact Assessment. In this article, I would like to discuss the differences between these two assessments and which perspective each assessment addresses.

What is ISO 42001?

ISO 42001 is an international standard that defines requirements for the implementation of an AI management system. It aims to support organizations in using AI technologies responsibly, safely and ethically. A key element of this standard is the requirement for comprehensive assessment processes to identify and manage the potential risks and impacts of AI systems.

AI risk assessment: focus on internal risks

An AI risk assessment is a systematic process for identifying, evaluating and managing risks associated with the use of AI systems within an organization. The focus is therefore on the company that uses AI technologies. It aims to determine the probability of occurrence and impact of negative events for the organization and to deal with them appropriately.

Selected key aspects of AI risk assessment:

Identifying risks: recognizing potential vulnerabilities and weaknesses in AI systems, such as bias in data sets, security vulnerabilities or technical malfunctions.

Risk assessment: Analyzing the likelihood and potential impact of identified risks.

Risk management: Development of strategies to mitigate or eliminate risks through technical or organizational measures.

Monitoring and review: Continuous monitoring of risks and adjustment of risk management strategies as required.

AI system impact assessment: consideration of external effects

In contrast, an AI system impact assessment considers the broader effects of using an AI system on external stakeholders and society as a whole. This approach goes beyond the perspective of the organization itself and analyses how a specific AI system influences its environment. The focus here is therefore not only on the organization itself, but also on all stakeholders who could be affected by its use.

Selected key aspects of the AI System Impact Assessment:

Stakeholder analysis: identification of all affected parties, including customers, employees, suppliers and the general public.

Social and ethical impacts: Assessment of how the AI system impacts social dynamics, equality, privacy and ethical standards.

Environmental and economic impact: Examining the environmental consequences and economic effects that could arise from the use of the AI system.

Transparency and accountability: Ensuring that the decisions of the AI system are comprehensible and responsibilities are clearly defined.

Differences in perspective and approach

Although both assessments aim to identify and solve potential problems associated with AI systems, they differ significantly in their approach and focus.

1. internal vs. external perspective

  • AI Risk Assessment: Focuses on internal risks within the organization and aims to ensure the smooth operation and safety of AI.
  • AI System Impact Assessment: Takes an external perspective and analyzes how an AI system affects external stakeholders and society.

2. short-term vs. long-term view

  • AI Risk Assessment: Often deals with immediate risks to the organization that need to be addressed quickly.
  • AI System Impact Assessment: Looks at long-term effects and sustainability aspects from the perspective of those affected.

Why both assessments are necessary according to ISO 42001

ISO 42001 recognizes that a holistic approach to AI management is essential. While the AI Risk Assessment helps to minimize internal risks and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, the AI System Impact Assessment requires organizations to responsibly assess the impact of the use of AI systems on all affected parties and consider possible consequences.

By combining both assessments, organizations can:

  • Ensure appropriate safety: Risks for the organization itself as well as for those affected by the use of AI are identified and addressed.
  • Comply with ethical standards: The impact on people and society is considered, leading to responsible decisions.
  • Ensure legal compliance: Legal risks are minimized through compliance with regulations and standards.
  • Protect reputation: Proactively managing risks and impacts builds stakeholder trust.

Conclusion

Both approaches complement each other and together provide a comprehensive framework for responsibly managing the challenges and opportunities of AI. By meeting the requirements of ISO 42001, organizations can not only protect their own interests, but also adequately address those of those affected.
